BAG History Group / History Festival May Program

South Australia's History Festival is an annual statewide event exploring South Australia's history through hundreds of events ranging from talks to tours, walks to workshops, exhibitions to special events and just about everything in between. BAG has participated in the history festival for many years and is pleased to present our 2025 tours.

Mitcham Hills Train Journey

- Focus on Natural Heritage

Enjoy a scenic train journey through Mitcham Hills to appreciate the legacy developed by the Ashby family on their farmland including Watiparinga National Trust Reserve and Wittunga. Includes a guided walk and refreshments at Wittunga and walking to and from Coromandel Station to Wittunga.

 

WHEN: Tues 13 May OR Tues 27 May; 8:50am – 12:00pm

WHERE: Meet at the Blackwood Railway Station

COST: $10 plus train ticket if applicable

Belair National Park - Off the Beaten Track

Tour Australia’s second oldest national park in a minibus with a guide to sites of historic significance, including Old Government House. Walk in the bush to learn about native flora, Indigenous & Colonial history and visit unusual memorials.

 NB this activity involves some short distance walks on rough tracks.

 

WHEN: Sun 4 May approx. 4.5 hours -

Tour A @ 8:30AM - Meet Volunteer Centre

Tour B - 10:50AM - Meet at Old Government House​

COST: $35 includes free entry to Belair NP and Old Govt house & refreshments

We are Their Heirs

Their names appear on street signs, reserves, ovals
and buildings around the Mitcham Hills. But who were
these European pioneers of the 19th and early 20th
century?
This illustrated talk focuses on the men and women
who saw the district develop from forest to farmland,
until the thriving townships of Blackwood, Belair,
Coromandel Valley and Eden Hills appeared.
